AIDS 'Red alert' in North The LTTE has warned the people in the North to be vigilant about AIDS and to be cautious with expatriates returning to the Peninsula from abroad. The medical unit of the LTTE launched an AIDS awareness campaign on Wednesday following a large number of expatriates returning to the North from Europe and various other Western countries on holidays. According to LTTE's media spokesperson, the AIDS awareness campaign in the North has been initiated along with the Medical Faculty of Jaffna with posters warning the civilians against the deadly disease. "So far eleven patients with AIDS have been identified in the North and there are some more believed to be living with the HIV virus. We do not want to take any chance. Therefore measures have been taken to accelerate the campaign against AIDS in the North," the spokesperson said. According to the spokesperson, measures have also been taken to equip the hospitals in Jaffna to tackle AIDS. Meanwhile the UNICEF in the North has also initiated a separate AIDS awareness programme, and launched an AIDS prevention campaign. - AP |
