Bid to stop exodus of illicit immigrants by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE Joint Police-Naval excerises to be launched shortly in the Indian Ocean will prevent the exodus of illicit immigrants to Italy from the Sri Lankan shores in the future. IGP Indra de Silva who had discussions with the Navy Commander in Chief Daya Sandagiri over these joint patrols when the former paid a courtesy call at the Naval Headquarters recently. Commenting on the recent raid where 264 Sri Lankan youth were caught by the Sri Lanka Navy about 4-5 miles off the coast of Chillaw heading towards Italy, Senior Supdt. of Police (CID) D.S.Y. Samaratunga, said that they were able to identify the mastermind behind the human smuggling racket. Over 250 youths aged between of 20-30 aboard a trawler named "Athula -Putha" bound to Italy had been intercepted in mid sea. The racketeer, who was earlier nabbed for a similar offence, is absconding, he said. Meanwhile, the 264 youths were produced before courts and remanded pending investigations, police said. |
