Death of former Mayor of Kotte Former Mayor of Kotte Chandra de Silva, who was the Opposition Leader of Kotte Municipal Council and Chief SLFP organiser (Kotte), died after a brief illness. Chandra de Silva started his career as the librarian of the Kotte Urban Council before losing his job in 1980,for participating in a strike. He became an Attorney-at-Law in 1985 and successfully contested the Kotte Urban Council election in 1991. In 1997 when the Kotte Urban Council was upgraded as a municipal council he became the first Mayor of Kotte with a majority of 19,000 votes. During his tenure as Mayor, he strove to develop the area and built a sports stadium for the benefit of the youth. He was also instrumental in constructing several libraries and children's parks. A father of three children, de Silva passed away at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital on Friday. His remains are lying at his Nawala residence. His remains will be taken to Kotte MC tomorrow (December 29) at 11.00 am. The funeral takes place the same day at 4.00 pm at Welikada Municipal Council premises. |
