Unique concept for better transport

The Ministry of Western Region has come out with a unique concept for a better transport solution in order to arrest the ever increasing traffic congestion in the Capital Colombo and suburban areas.

Under this project it has been earmarked to embark upon a light rail system initially the 34KM stretch from Moratuwa to Kiribathgoda and the 12KM stretch from Pelawtta to Colombo Fort along the existing highway corridors. This will be laid as overhead railway line in an elevated Concrete Platform thus reducing the inconvenience to the general public as there will be less acquisition of properties. This type of light rail transport system is very popular in New Delhi and Calcutta in India.

On the invitation of the Govt. of Sri Lanka the Indian authorities have come forward to prepare a more detailed proposal for this purpose following the initiatives taken by the Cabinet appointed Negotiating Committee and the Project Committee in the year 2002.

A special delegation lead by Mr. E. Sreedharan, Managing Director, Delhi Metro rail Corporation visited Sri Lanka along with Indian Railway Experts to help Sri Lankan experts to prepare a more detailed project proposal.

During their short visit to Sri Lanka, after visiting all major city roads and suburban railway net work around Colombo, the Team of Experts made a presentation to the Sri Lankan Counterparts on 9th December at the Ministry of Western Region Development 3rd Floor, Sethsiripaya, Battaramulla.

This meeting was chaired by the Secretary, Ministry of Western Region Development and government officials including Sri Lanka Railway, UDA and RDA, BOI, Ministry of Western Region Development, Ministry of Finance were present. At the end of the meeting they agreed to formulate a detail project proposal based on their findings.

This Project is estimated to cost 920 Million US dollars and once the project proposal is completed this will be implemented as a joint venture project with financial assistance from donor agencies.
