PM condoles over death of Rengadass Swami

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe condoling on the death of Sri Rengadass Swami of the Sri Sevi Karumari Amman Kovil, Colombo 13 who passed away on Dec. 24 states:

"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of Sri Rengadass Swami who was resident at the Sri Devi Karumari Amman Kovil.

"I am aware that Sri Rengadass Swami committed his life to developing the Kovil and assisted the people regardless of their caste, creed or religion to overcome the various problems they were faced with. "On this sad occasion, I extend to the Board of Trustees of the Kovil our deepest sympathies on his passing away.

"The best tribute that all of us who knew him can pay to him is to dedicate ourselves to the service of humanity."

Honorary doctorate for Thera

Ven. Shashthrapathi Panditha Koampitiye Sri Susila Thera, Chief Incumbent of Elpitiya Sri Elapatharamaya and Godakawela Sri Mahinda Maha Pirivena and President of 'Samastha Lanka Parivenadhipathi Kruthyadikari Sangamaya', a Thera who had brought much fame to his temple as well as the Sabaragamuwa area by his eloquent sermons, has been conferred with a honorary doctorate titled "Sri Saddharma Vagiswara Sahithya Shuree."

The relevant Akthapathra presentation is scheduled to be held on 30.12.2003 at the BMICH with the participation of the Thrinikaika Mahanayaka Theras and several Ministers and Members of Parliament.

On 31.12.2003, a felicitation ceremony is being organized for the Thera at 3 p.m. at Godakawela town and thereafter to be taken in procession to the temple.

Appeal

Shehan needs financial assistance

Four-year-old Shehan Weerasooriya has been diagnosed with a severe liver affliction - Glycogen Storage Disease - by Prof. Lamabadusooriya. The ailment cannot be treated in Sri Lanka, but Prof. James Leonard of the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in England has agreed to perform the required surgery, which is estimated to cost Rs. 4,000,000 (four million rupees).

The surgery is scheduled for end March 2004, and Shehan's parents, who can't afford the money appeal to the public for financial assistance. Contributions can be made to W.A.A.S. Weerasooriya, A/C No. 8440009349, Commercial Bank, Gampaha Sri Lanka.

Regina desperate for assistance

Regina Mary (31) of Dessford Estate Nanu Oya needs heart surgery for double valve replacement. The Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital has estimated the cost of surgery is Rs. 370,000. Financial support needed

Dinithi Prasadi Rupasingha, (16) resided at Saranapala Mawatha, Borella has been diagnosed as having a large secundum atrial septal defect and severe valvar pulmonary stenosis and requires percutaneous device closure of ASD and Balloon Dilatation of Pulmonary valve at an early date. The estimated cost of the treatment is Rs. 450,000 and Dinithi's father Sepala R. Sandhya seeks financial assistance from philanthropists to fund the operation.
