President still keen to work with PM President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga is still keen to reach an agreement with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and establish a working arrangement with the UNF government for a short period. Sources close to the President revealed yesterday that the President was keen to work with the Government on several common issues that were important for the country. According to a PA politburo member, the President was not interested in sharing power or portfolios, but on continuing the peace process, safeguarding democracy, ensuring good governance and developing infrastructure and several other important matters. The politburo member said future talks with the UNF government would be conducted on constitutional arrangements, that would seek solutions to the national problem within a short period. The spokesman also said that although the President had identified strengthening the peace process as a priority task, she would also be looking into energising the Bribery and Corruption Commission, changing the electoral system, having an impartial police service and a number of other matters which are essential for the development of the country. He also said that the President had indicated the necessity of putting aside party politics for the time being, and working for the country. - DPL |
