Journalists' contribution significant - Minister Participants of the Certificate Course in Journalism were awarded certificates by Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando who was the chief guest at the award ceremony and the concluding session held recently at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. The course was conducted by the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, under the aegis of the Technical Co-operation Programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Minister Fernando addressing the gathering said that this was the 23rd training course conducted under the Technical Co-operation Programme since it was launched in January 2001. He said that over the last 3 years, 212 foreign participants, mainly from South Asia and South East Asia, had attended these courses which covered a wide range of subjects including agriculture, sustainable development and environment, capital markets, communication and information technology, governance and public policy. "Journalism is an important subject in the current context in the process of globalization, which continues to affect, and fundamentally transform the field of dissemination of information. New developments in the vast area of communication, the free flow of information which transcend borders, has revolutionized the field of information. The right to information was adopted at the Commonwealth Summit in Nigeria recently and we will be presenting a Freedom of Information Act in Parliament. "The role of the media and the work of the journalist have thus become more challenging and, more complex. "A journalist is a person with independent opinions but not someone who twists the truth. The contribution made by the journalists towards building public opinion is significant. At the same time, the media also contributes in making a significant contribution to the decision making process of government leaders and policy-makers. " The course that has been conducted, I hope has helped the participants in gaining a better insight on the subject", the minister stated. |
