Bloomfield on course for outright win in Premier League cricket final

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

Bloomfield are their way to clinch the Premier League cricket title. They already have a first innings win and are on course of a probable outright win on the third day of the final against Colts at the SSC grounds today.

At the close of the second day yesterday, Shanuka Dissanayake (83) and Kaushalya Weeraratne added 88 invaluable runs for the 8th wicket in 89 balls to ensure Bloomfield get a first innings lead. Dissanayake strode to the wicket when Bloomfield were badly placed with 100 for 5. He batted with authority to swing the game in Bloomfield's favour aided by Weeraratne who rendered an invaluable support thumping 25. Dissanayaka faced 110 balls and hit 11 fours while adding 88 with Kaushalya Weeraratne.

From 100 for 5, the last five Bloomfield batsmen added 139 runs, spearheaded by Dissanayaka's responsible inning.

In reply to Colts meagre 175 runs, Bloomfield were all out for 239 runs giving them a 64 run lead. Colts in their second innings were 158 for 8 at close with a slender 96 run overall lead with two wickets in hand. Left-arm spinner Sanath Jayasuriya was the main wrecker in the Colts second innings, taking four quick wickets. He claimed the wicket of Romesh Kaluwitharana in the last ball of the day. Kaluwitharana who was out for a 'duck' in the first innings and was striking the ball well when he was judged leg before wicket in the second innings after scoring a fine 72 which included 8 fours and a six facing 118 balls.
