Fibreglass company seeks export markets by ANTON NONIS USS Services (Pvt) Ltd. (USSL), which deals with fibreglass raw materials in the local market, recently clinched a sizeable export order to the Maldives. This was the first export order for USSL, which has been in business for two years. USSL Chairman, Udaya Kulatilleke said exports to Maldives has encouraged the company to look for more export markets. Director, Sarath Silva said the company, which was established in March 2001, found it difficult at the beginning with big competitors in the market. The company started with three workers. The business grew gradually and the workforce now stands at 35. Silva attributed increased sales to the good quality of raw materials and reasonable pricing. Polyester resin, chopped strand mat and pigments were some of the fibreglass items sold. The delivery of raw materials is done at no extra cost to the customer. "The prompt discharge of sales orders has enabled the company to build up 'good will' among customers," Silva said. Transportation became a problem as the volume of orders originating from various parts of the country started to grow. With the intention of reducing transport costs, the company opened three new branches in Negombo, Beruwala and Matara. These were the areas from which most orders were placed. Technical advice to customers is provided free of charge. The company, as a policy, has decided to stay clear of the manufacturing business using fibreglass materials, which it leaves to its customers. Bank of Ceylon, Sampath Bank and Commercial Bank have assisted USSL in its success. |
