Traffic police to nab drunken drivers

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

The Traffic Police will shortly launch a vigorous campaign to nab drunken drivers islandwide with the importation of 17,000 breathalysers from the United Kingdom.

DIG Traffic and Administration, Daya Jayasundera said the traffic police could not launch an effective enforcement programme owing to a shortage of breathalysers.

The new equipment will be distributed among police stations in the island to nab drunken drivers responsible for claiming lives of innocent pedestrians, Jayasundera said.

The Mount Lavinia police alone were able to detect 50 cases of drunk drivers on December 31, last year, he said. Police will administer the breathalyser test for those who appear to have consumed alcohol and if found guilty will be liable to a fine of Rs.3000 and suspension of the driving licence on a court order. The highest number of fatal traffic accidents have been reported from the Western Province.
