Incident at Ven. Soma Thera's cremation:

No arrests yet - CCD

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) investigating the distribution of leaflets by unknown persons at the cremation of Ven. Gangodawila Soma Thera at the independence square said they have not yet arrested anyone in connection with the incident.

Director, Colombo Crime Division, (CCD) SSP, Sarath Lugoda said the five persons arrested earlier for distributing the leaflets were not connected to the incident in any way. "Investigations reveal that they had merely come to witness the event that day."

SSP Lugoda said the leaflets did not contain any derogatory matter as such although it referred to Ven. Alle Gunawanse Thera.

The thera had lodged a complaint at the Cinnamon Gardens police station in this regard but had not made a statement so far to the Colombo Crime Division. The episode created a disturbance at the Independence Square when persons distributing the leaflets were attacked by a crowd of persons resulting in five persons being injured in the melee. Among the injured were a monk and a press photographer. The police had to fire tear gas to bring the situation under control.
