Symbols of renewed hope on every horizon in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, Slovenia and Sicily have been chosen by the prestigious London Times as the hot spots for tourists in 2004.

In a lengthy report on its travel pages yesterday (Saturday, January 3) Travel Editor Cath Urquhart stated that the beaches and the hotels in Sri Lanka are some of the very best in the world and there has never been a better time to visit the island.

The article looks back at the history of Sri Lanka, its hotels, and those particularly designed by the late world-renowned architect Bawa. In what is seen here as one of the biggest boosts for the country's tourism. The Times spread will be read by potential tourists from all parts of the world as its daily circulation is in the millions and is available at all tourists and capital cities.

Islamic relief - Sri Lanka appeals for donations to Iranian earthquake victims

Following the appeal made by the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran for International Assistance for the victims of the recent devastating earthquake which has already claimed 30,000 plus lives and destroyed 70% of the southeastern Iranian town of 100,000 people - Islamic Relief - Sri Lanka has come forward to collect donations only in kind from individuals and organisations. All items collected will be handed over to the Iranian Embassy in Sri Lanka which will airlift these to the affected area. Foodstuff are the most required item and should be in packeted for safe consumption for at least over the next three months.

A special appeal is made to organisations with trading links with Iran to participate in this effort to alleviate the human suffering following with the earthquake.

Forum for research and development

Dr. Sisira Siribaddana, executive committee member of the Sri Lankan Twin Registry, and a committee member of the Forum for Research and Development, will be participating at the 2nd Asian Regional IOF Conference on Osteoporosis in Hong Kong, from January 16 to 18.

This conference is devoted to increasing knowledge of Osteoporosis and to exchange expertise of leading researchers from all parts of the globe and is organised by International Osteoporosis Foundation.

Dr. Siribaddana has carried out several research projects on Osteoporosis and he will be participating as one of the panelists to the Consensus Development Conference: Guidelines for the Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Osteoporosis in Asia.

Invitation of proposals by India-Sri Lanka Foundation

The India-Sri Lanka Foundation, a fund set up by the Governments of India and Sri Lanka to promote bilateral co-operation in areas of education, culture, archaeology, agricultural research, science, technology, health, technical training, development and women's studies, will be holding its next meeting in Colombo in mid-January 2004.

Institutions/individuals interested in seeking financial assistance from the Foundation may apply to the Secretary, India-Sri Lanka Foundation, C/o High Commission of India, No. 36-38, Galle Road, Colombo 3.

Needs financial assistance

Master Earon Anandappa, a year-7 student of St. Peter's College, Bambalapitiya is suffering from advanced Leukaemia. He is currently at the National Cancer Institute - Maharagama and is being treated by Dr. Jayantha Balawardena.

Earon needs a bone-marrow transplantation urgently and this is the only treatment that can save his life. The bone-marrow transplantation has to be performed in India.

The total cost of this treatment would be between Rs. 2 - 2.5 million based on a preliminary quotation.

Any financial assistance to help cure Earon, will be gratefully accepted.
