Azwer calls international community to help Lanka to achieve peace

A. H. M. Azwer, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs called for the international community to help Sri Lanka achieve permanent peace and reiterated that Sri lankan citizens living in England and in Europe have a great duty to perform towards their country.

He said that every effort was being made by the United National Front government to bring about a peaceful settlement to the two decade old war, although decisive elements in the country endeavour to stall the peace process.

"The government is committed to restore peace through dialogue with the LTTE and other parties involved in the concerned matter Minister Azwer said adding that from December 5, 2001 people in the North went free of travel to the South and the same status quo is established in the North as well.

"The aspirations of the Muslim community is also being sought to bring about the lasting solutions to the conflict he said and added that life and property of the Muslims in the North and East should also be protected if peace is made a reality. Minister Azwer, was addressing the International Conference on the Peace Process in Sri Lanka, held at the Sudbury Hill Primary School Auditorium in Wembley, organised by the Centre for Culture, Peace and Development, and presided over by its President Mr. Bawa Abdul Cader. The gathering was also addressed by P. Chandrasekeran, Minister of Community Development and Selvam Adaikalanathan, MP, among others.

P. Chandrasekeran, Minister of Community Development said that his Upcountry Peoples Front had become a part of the UNF government to win the rights of the Indian Origin People and also to uplift their living conditions so that they could live as equal citizens in the country sharing equal rights with the rest of the people.

"This is the moment in history where all Tamils should stand united to achieve their ultimate goal and live as self respecting people", he said, assuring that he would do everything possible to achieve the best possible status for his people, and also lend every assistance to bring about a peaceful settlement for the people of North and East. S. Adaikalanathan, MP, M. S. Sathees Kumar, Mr. S. Sivapalan, Mrs. Asha Mohamed of Gampola, Mr. Anbarasan, Mr. B. A. Cader and several others addressed the Conference.

Two books written by B. A. Cader on the ethnic crisis of several countries were also released at this Conference.
