Atapattu (74) and Jayantha (98) help Southern Province to 306/7

Southern Province made merry to hit up 306 for 7 wickets on the opening day of their inter provincial cricket tournament match against Southern Province which began at the Asgiriya Stadium, Kandy yesterday. The match will be continued 10.00 a.m.

Southern Province Skipper Marvan Attapattu won the toss and elected to bat first on an easy paced wicket. Central Province went into the match without their skipper and test off spinner Muthiah Muralitharan who was replaced by left arm spinner Ranil Dhamikka who turns out for Chilaw Marians.

Central Province made an early breakthrough when Sanath Jayasuriya was snapped by central province skipper Kumar Sangakkara off Ruchira Perera cheaply for 4. Sanjay Rodrigo was next to caught in the second slip by Hasantha Fernando off Ruchira Perera for a duck. Score at that stage was 16 for 2.

But skipper Marvan Atapattu (74) and Saman Jayantha (98) resurrected the innings with a fine partnership of 158 for the 3rd wicket. Marvan Atapattu batting elegantly reached his 50 in 92 balls and in all batted for 206 minutes, hitting 11 fours off 143 deliveries. Saman Jayantha playing a more dominant role reached his fifty in 73 balls. He hit 16 fours and faced 137 balls in his 211-minute stay at the wicket.

At the close, Chamara Silva was unbeaten on 63 with 10 fours and he put on 50 for the 5th wicket with Prasanna Jayawardena (20).

Southern Province 306 for 7 at close in 84.1 overs (Marvan Attapattu 58, Saman Jayantha 98, Chamara Silva not out 63, Prasanna Jayawardena 20, Nimesh Perera 29, Ruchira Perera 4 for 65, Ranil Dhammika 2 for 46).
