Health workers' satyagraha

by Shanika Sriyananda

Health workers threatening a fast unto death if their salary anomalies are not rectified by jan 20, will stage a satyagraha campaign at 12 noon in Colombo, tomorrow. Over 100 health workers representing 53 trade unions in the health sector are expected to participate.

The 80,000 strong members of the Heath Services Trade Union Alliance (HSTUA) who have been reporting to work wearing 'black bands' and launched a sick note campaign to win their demands, decided to commence the satyagraha. Saman Ratnapriya, HSTUA Joint Convenor told the Sunday Observer that they will meet the Ministerial sub-committee on January 20. "If we do not receive a 'satisfactory reply' we will commence a fast unto death on the same day", he said.

According to Ratnapriya, Registered Medical Officers and Assistant Medical Officers have also pledged to support the move.

"If we fail in these two attempts, we will launch an islandwide strike from January 26", Ratnapriya added.
