Attempt on life of Matale Mayor: Inside job? by S. Selvakumar Police investigating the attempt on the life of Matale Mayor Mohamed Hilmy Careem has identified the person who handed over the J.r. type hand grenade to the would be assailants. A hand grenade was thrown into the bed room of the Mayor at Dole Road,Matale in the early hours of January 1 while several development projects were due to be inaugurated on the same day by the Mayor within the Matale municipality. The huge explosion caused considerable damage to the residence but Mr. Careem escaped unhurt. A high ranking police source believes that all leads points to the fact that it was an inside job meaning that the UNP Mayor's associates may have had a hand in the coup as a result of jealousy due to the rising popularity of the Mayor following the good work he has performed in transforming the town into a model one and also due to the good work that he continued to do. Last week the residents of Matale held a huge protest rally in the town urging the Mayor to continue the good work and calling upon the police to bring the offenders to book. Five special police teams are following all information that have been received and were optimistic that once they arrest the person who provided the hand grenade all others involved could be arrested and charged. |
