Footwear village to be set up in Pitipana COLOMBO, (Lankapuvath) - A multi purpose footwear village is to be set up on 50 acres of under utilized land obtained from Mahahena Estate in Pitipana, Minister of Rural Economy Bandula Gunawardane told Lankapuvath. There are a large number of footwear manufactures scattered in surrounding areas such as Homagama, Maharagama, Kesbewa and Piliyandala.Most of them at present engage in sub contracting work for the supply parts of footwear and accessories to large scale footwear manufacturers and exporters. Some of them manufacture footwear independently and supply to the local market and some others manufacture items related to the footwear industry, approximately 100 of them will be selected for the project by the Ministry of Rural Economy. Minister Bandula Gunawardane said that this village would open a clear avenue of development of manufacturers engaged in the production of footwear and accessories associated with the industry, it would also create employment in the area and generate new income for the residents. |
