Maldives library - Lanka's gift

The construction work of the Central Library in Maldives, a symbol of the long-standing co-operation between Sri Lanka and Maldives will be inaugurated in Male by Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando and his Maldivian counterpart Fathula Jameel today, January 18.

The library, a gift worth Rs. 150 million from Sri Lanka is expected to be completed by 2005.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is the implementation agency for the project and the State Engineering Corporation will be the consultants.

Rodney Perera presents credentials

The first-ever High Commissioner from Sri Lanka to Malta (resident in Rome) Mr. Rodney Perera, presented credentials to the President of Malta Mr. Guido De Marco on 18th December 2003.

Sri Lanka and Malta are both members of the United Nations, the Commonwealth and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Religious leader on short visit 

His Holiness Afdhalul Ulama Ash Shaikh Dr. Thaika Shuaib Alim, MFA, BA (Hons), MA PhD, DLit (Jalali), the supreme leader of Aroosiyathul Quadiriya World Order, has arrived in Sri Lanka on a short visit.

CP delegation for World Social Forum

A delegation of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka representing the leadership of the trade unions has left for Bombay to participate in the World Social Forum to be held from January 16-21.

The delegation comprises O. A. Ramiah, W. H. Piyadasa, Raja Uswetakeiyawa and Premadasa Dissanayake.

One-hundred and thirty countries are expected to participate in the World Social Forum. Bombay is the venue for the fourth such gathering of the world's anti-globalization activists.
