Performing Haj

by S.H.A.careem

Pilgrims who go to Mekkah to perform Haj usually carry water from the ZamZam well for distribution among friends and relatives, because Muslims throughout the world believe that the water is blessed and considered to be one of the best gifts to be offered. This year pilgrims from Sri Lanka will arrive with over 15,000 bottles of ZamZam water for its religious significance.

Origin of Zam Zam

Prophet Ibrahim made the following supplication when the people of Arabia suffered without sufficient water. "O our Lord I have made some of my offspring to dwell in a valley without cultivation by the sacred House ; Inorder , O our Lord ,that they may establish regular prayer ; so fill the hearts of some among men with love towards them and feed them with fruits; so that they may give thanks".

(Quran 14:37) Allah accepted the Du'a after Hajrah (wife of Prophet Ibrahim) had a hard time locating water in the neighbourhood of the safa and the Marwa. Water poured from under the feet of the child Ismail. Hajrah tried not to lose the water by making a circle of mud around it.

For this process of mudding around it was called ZAM ZAM. The history of Zam Zam is very interesting. For a number thousands of years, the water of Zam Zam continued to flow and millions of Muslims throughout the history of Islam have drank it with ferventness.

The pilgrims througjout the world do carry water of Zam Zam with them back to their home countries. Muslims do believe that the Zam zam water is blessed and accordingly it is considered as one of the best gift to be offered. During its history the well of zam Zam was destroyed and finally was rediscovered by Abdul Mutalib, the grand father of the Prophet.

The water of Zam zam has many names among which are the following: Hazmattu Jibril, Hamza Jibril, Suqya Allah ismail, La Sharq, La Tazimm, Barakah, Sayidah, Nafiah, Bushra, Safiyah, Barrah, Issmah, Salimah, Kafiyah, Afiyah, Taherah, Mufdat, Taamu, Tumin, Shifan, Suqmin, Hazmattu etc.

It is reported that the prophet rubbed the gums of his two grandchildren Hassen and Hussain with dates and Zam Zam. It was also reported that the Prophet used to carry the water Zam Zam in pitchers and pots to the sick people. He used to amke them to drink that water.

The prophet used to offer zam zam as a gift to the needy. Due to its religious significance the water of Zam Zam has healing effects. In one Hadith it is said; narrated by Jabir that the Prophet Mohammed has stated "Water of zam zam is good for whatever (purpose) it ahs been drank".

In another Hadith the Prophet said: "Water of zam zam is a healer of every disease". Another hadith says that Prophet said: "Water of zam zam for whatever purpose it has been drank. If you drink it to be cured, Allah will cure you." In another Hadith it is reported that prophet had said: "Looking at zam zam is worship (to Allah) and it helps to get rid of the sins".

Yet another Hadith says "Whosoever pours water of zam zam above his head three times, he will not commit sins."

Senior experts of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission have found the water of Zam Zam well to be scientifically superior to tap or solar pump water.

They have analysed and tested samples of water from the Zam Zam well and from tap and solar pumps recently. It was found that the Zam Zam water has a curative effect.

Alkaline in anture, the Zam zam water can neutralise excess hydrochloric acid formed in the stomach and reduces heartburn.

Iodide, sulphate and nitrate contents are also much higher in the Zam Zam water. Supply of Iodide through Zam Zam may sufficiently fulfil the requirement of Iodide for the thyroid organ of a body. The research carried out jointly by M.A.Khan, A.K.M.Sheriff, K.M.Idris Ali and M.Alamgir revealed that contents of micro-nutrients liek magnesium, sodium and potassium were manifold higher in Zam Zam water than in tap and solar pump water.
