Buduruvagala

The height of majesty

The tallest rock cut Buddha statue in Sri Lanka, is in Buduruvagala. Standing 51 feet tall, it is even taller than the Avukana Buddha which is 39 ft. in height and 10 ft. across the shoulders, and the Maligavila Buddha statue which is 34 ft in height and 10 ft across the shoulders. The Buduruvagala Buddha statue near Wellawaya, stands in between images of Bodhisatvas each of which is 40 ft tall and smaller than the Buddha. There are 7 figures carved on the rock wall. The Bodhisatva on the Buddha’s right hand side is Avalokitesvara with the goddess Tara on the left.Pix by Hari Namasivayam
