Trance and hip-hop now his fav

DJ Shawn

Picking up his friendship from where he left off, with all his DJ friends, is DJ Shawn Corera back home from Washington DC to spend a short holiday over here. "It's good to be back and I've been going around catching up on the music scene," Shawn opens his conversation with us, in a laid back manner. "But the music played over here is different to what we have to spin in Washington.

Here it's more commercial but over there the discos spin trance, hip hop, international - in that the grooves are Arabic, Spanish, salsa and meringue. I work a 9 to 5 job in a Consulting Company EFC and spin grooves weekly on Thursdays and Fridays at Club Platinum and on Saturdays at Club VIP."

With DJ Marlon (Marlon de Silva), DJ Shawn has registered their own company called 'Music to Max' and they have about six DJ's, all Sri Lankans working for them and providing music for weddings, graduations, get togethers and formal dances. The other DJ's are DJ MOH (Shafraz Moh), DJ Vidura - (Vidura de Silva), DJ Lenny (Lenath) and DJ Dominic Stevens. "At this point I must say a big thank you to DJ Rajiv (Rajiv Ellawala) for teaching me everything about Deejaying when we were together at Dreams Music Centre, and it has held in good stead" comments Shawn.

Mignonne

New Year's Eve at the Hyatt Regency, Washington, Bethesda was a great success reveals Shawn. The event was organised by the Sri Lankan Association and featured our living legend Mignonne. "There was no band that evening, I was the DJ for that evening and Mignonne was a featured act. She was very professional, she was singing on tracks and I was amazed. For me it was the first time I heard her, she was only a name to me when I was here in Sri Lanka and we were kids so to speak. But that day listening to her I had a great deal of respect for her, she was way ahead in her music" Shawn speaks with a great deal of emphasis.

Just before he left us DJ Shawn shared the interesting news that at a radio show on WPGC 99.5 a 24 hour station in Washington Puff Daddy guests for an hour, also others like DJ Flex, DJs Slash and Fresh Prince, not forgetting RUN DMC. Lucky Shawn he is in the thick of it all! Good luck and bon voyage to you.
