Private hospitals are awaiting instructions from the Department of Epidemiology and the Ministry of Health as to how they should deal with an Avian flu crisis, should it occur in Sri Lanka. "We don't have a single case of Avian flu in Sri lanka as yet, even though we will probably be able to deal with a crisis if it occurs. But we have to wait for instructions from the Health Ministry to set out our course of action. Till we receive these instructions we are unable to speculate about how we shall be dealing with a situation', a spokesman from the Durdans Hospital told the Sunday Observer. Other private hospitals contacted by the Sunday Observer were of the same opinion. "We understand that these instructions are now being processed and will be available to us shortly", a spokesman from a leading private hospital said. Neither Health Ministry nor Epidemiology Officials were available for comment. Meanwhile, the Sunday Observer understands that health workers are now cautioning the public to refrain from eating any imported chicken especially from countries afflicted by the flu. (CA) |
