Sri Lanka u-19 in forceful 9-wkt win

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Sri Lanka under-19 cricketers trounced the touring West Indies under-19 outfit by 9-wickets in the first of four One-Day Internationals at the NCC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday. The Windies winning the toss made a paltry 106 in 37.3 overs, while the Lankans replied with 108 for 1 in just 21.2 overs.

Sri Lanka's skipper Ferveez Mahroof, who was adjudged the Observer-Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year last year, made the initial breakthough among the Windies top order to claim 3 for 14 in nine overs, the highest wicket-taker was right-arm off-spinner Mohamed Suraj who finished with 4 for 15 in his 10 overs.

The young West Indians would certainly have been in much greater trouble if not for their No. 8 batsman, Zamal Khan. In his 40-ball unbeaten knock of 42, he thumped five boundaries and a six. Only two others were able to reach double figures. They were opener Tishan Maraj (18) and Jonathan Augustus (12).

Sri Lanka after losing the early wicket of opener Damindu Kularatne when the total was on 11 never looked a side who were going to lose the battle. Co-opener, the left-handed Upul Tharanga and No. 3 Nadeera Nawala were associated in a grand 97-run partnership for the unbroken second wicket to see Sri Lanka triumph comfortably.

Tharanga was in a belligerent mood slamming as much as 12 boundaries in his unbeaten 75 made in only 68 deliveries, while Nawala's unbeaten 26 with three fours came off 50 balls.

The second One-Day International is tomorrow (Monday) at the CCC grounds, Maitland Crescent.
