Sri Lanka vs India Carrom 'Tests' start...

The Indian Carrom team consisting of eight 'slicers' - four men and four women arrived on Thursday at the invitation of the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka to play three 'Tests' series against Sri Lanka.

The First 'Test' began yesterday (Saturday) at the Central Bank Auditorium at Anuradhapura. The Test match is conducted by the Anuradhapura Carrom Association in collaboration with the North Central Province Sports Ministry and sponsored by People's Bank.

The Second 'Test' will be on February 3 at the Colombo Hilton (Blue Elephant Restaurant) and sponsored by the Colombo Hilton Sports Club.

The Third and final 'Test' will be on February 6 at the 'Fingara' Town and Country Club at Rattanapitiya, Boralesgamuwa.

The Indian carromites will also play a friendly match with the Sri Lanka President's Team at the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka Headquarters at Reid Avenue, Colombo 7.

The Indian slicers have maintained their superiority in the previous Test series, winning all of them played here and in India. The Indo-Lanka Test Series started in 1979 (only men) and five Tests were played from October 9 to 17 in Sri Lanka. The visitors drubbed Sri Lanka 5-0 and the 'Tests' were played at Ceylon Tobacco Company Recreation Hall, Kotahena, Moratuwa YMCA, Kandy YMCA, Sri Lanka Tyre Corporation Kelaniya and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Kolonnawa.

India won the Rolling Trophy donated by B. Bangaru Babu, a former Secretary All-India Carrom Federation and 'live-wire' and great promoter of carrom in India. The Sri Lanka Carrom team was represented by Ranjan Fernando (Captain), Langley Mathiasz, K. V. Ranasinghe, Winston Rajudeen, J. N. Abeywardena, Ravi Wickremasinghe (brother of Amitha Wickremasinghe), Bradley Mathiasz, R. R. Perera (Manager).

The writer was the Secretary of the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka.

The Indian team was Suhas Kambli, (Bombay), late V. Lazar (Tamil Nadu), M. v. Gopalakrishna (Bangalore), Maria Irudayam (Tamil Nadu), M. Govindaraj (Karnataka), B. Bangaru Babu (Manager). For the three Test Series which began yesterday, the Sri Lanka team is made up of: (Men's) - Viraj Fernando (Captain), Chamil Cooray, D. N. Fernando, Ajith Chandrasoma. (Women) Amitha Wickremasinghe (captain), Nayana Wickremasinghe, Leela de Silva, Kalyani Amerasinghe, R. Athauda (Manager), K. Jayasinghe (Assistant Manager).

India (Men) - R. M. Shankara, Ashok Gaur, Kubendra Babu, Sandeep Devruhkar. (Women): K. Suvarna, P. Nirmala, D. Swarnalatha, Kavitha Somanchi, S. K. Sharma (Manager).

Amitha Wickremasinghe, the 'slicer' with the magic touch is the most experienced player in both sides. She had the distinction of winning a 'double' women singles title and the women's doubles title (partnering her sister Pradeepa Wickremasinghe) at the 1979 Indian Carrom National Championships held in Nagpur, Amitha had played in all women 'Test matches' since 1982.
