Sepaktakraw to be popularised in Sri Lanka by LAL GUNESEKERA The Sri Lanka Amateur sepaktakraw Federation (SLASF) chief, Nizam Hajireen, who is also a senior Vice-President of the Asian Sepaktakraw Federation (ASF), are making every attempt to promote this ancient sport in Sri Lanka and has organised a series of exhibition matches on Wednesday and Thursday (4th and 5th Feb) in Hatton and Hambantota respectively. Speaking to the Sunday Observer, Hajireen, who is a triple international, said that the programme in Hatton is being organised by SSP Cecil Perera in association with the Hatton Police, while the programme in Hambantota is being organised by G. Dias who is a Working Director of Lanka Salt Ltd. in collaboration with its Sports Club. The SLASF's men's team will be led by Reeza, while its women's side will be led by L. P. Saminra with Dinusha as the vice-captain. Hajireen expects the schoolchildren in these areas (Hatton and Hambantota) to witness these matches and get interested in the sport so that they could introduce it to their schools with all help extended by the SLASF. He further said that a woman umpire too, will officiate (after being nominated) at the 19th King's Cup World Sepaktakraw Championship to be staged in Thailand later this year. She is Felicia Fernando, while the men's umpire will be Milroy Fernando. It will be recalled that Sri Lanka's sides have won medals at this event in Thailand earlier. Hajireen also disclosed that invitations have been received for the SLASF to participate in tournaments in Thailand, Malaysia, Canada, Indonesia and Vietnam, and that the SLASF have tentatively accepted the invitations. The SLASF conducts practices at the CR & FC's basketball court every weekend from 7 a.m. and those interested in taking up this sport are requested to get in touch with Nizam Hajireen. |
