Restoration of South Wing of Galle Face Hotel under way By Chanuka Mannapperuma One of the Sri Lanka's venerable landmark of hospitality,the Galle Face Hotel(GFH) has embarked on restoration project for it's Southern Wing which had been closed for 30 years.The project has received full BOI status and is targeting the high spending traveller in search of a special experience in Sri Lanka.Chairman of GFC Sanjeev Gardiner said, refurbishment of over 63 De luxe rooms and 20 suites investment has estimated to cost over Rs. 500 million. According to the Chairman each suite will be equipped with fittings and facilities,including valuable electric items and a mini bar and other standed features of a luxury hotel room.Every room will also have a butler service. With a new executive lounge hope to cater specifically to business travellers who will also be able to enjoy the facilities of a new business centre.He said that their aim is to attract more tourists to their hotel and country. GFH non-Executive Director Ken Balendra said, Southern wing will consist of an exclusive retail outlets which will include some of the most famous names in this country as well as overseas.It will include two specialty restaurants,a pub and a wine bar with a cellar in the basement below.A spa at the basement level occupying 20,000 square feet,a fully equipped gym and a beauty salon will also be available.Further he said "Our GFH is one of the greatest hotel in the world which has well trained staff with customer friendly services". Gardiner said, the hotel since the closure of the Southern Wing had been operating with 84 rooms in the Northern Wing, which would be upgrade in the second phase.GHF has been averaging an occupancy rate of above 50% and it's average room rate in December was above $ 200 to $ 1,000 per night. |
