Postponement of work

by S.R.Balachandran

Never postpone your work when you have the capacity to finish it today. The Japanese have a theory that if you can complete a particular job, delaying it serves no purpose. Sometimes, finishing a particular job could be a little problematic and frustrating. However, you should know to select and finish them early. You will enjoy mental peace.

Doing your work without postponement has the following advantages:

a. Active participation means no postponement. If you feel that you are a galloping racehorse from the start, there will be no postponement.

b. It is equally important as punctuality. Coming for work on time is equally important as finishing the work on time.

c. You could avoid being statute-barred. Example, if you do not take action against a debtor within one year over his/her transactions, the debt may become statute barred.

d. Penalties can be avoided. In the case of Income Tax, payments and submission of necessary documents on time is essential.

e. Your delay may upset the commencement of other jobs (critical and non-critical jobs).

f. Tomorrow may be too late. You may lose a valuable tender or share deal.

g. Some resources may not be available the next day (due to staff absenteeism, power failure or sickness)

h. If your work is finished, you could supervise others' work even from your house

i. A good leadership means timely performance and not postponement

j. Timely performance means helping the management to take corrective action on time.

Further, you should plan your daily work every morning and finish this work the same day. If necessary you could call for additional resources without postponing the job. Work could be allocated according to the following basis.

i. Urgent and important

ii. Important not urgent

iii. Urgent not important

Income tax payments fall into the first category. On realising the importance of the work, an active management should not postpone work decisions.
