A day for loving, caring and sharing

by Neville Perera

Lovers all over the world celebrate Valentine's day on February 14th. On this special day thousands of lovers exchange gifts, flowers, kisses and hugs in the name of love. "Love makes the world round," goes the famous French song. It is a day for loving, caring and sharing.

True love reveals itself, not in a great outward show of emotion, but rather in a thousand small acts of devotion and consideration. Remember, even the smallest act of love may be cherished for a lifetime. Do not keep the alabaster boxes of your compassion and tenderness sealed up until your loved ones and friends are dead. Fill their lives today with sweetness.

A heart filled with love always overflows. So, by heartfelt words and deeds you can show them that you love them 'with a pure heart frequently.' The Bible says, "Let us all love one another."

Every time we insult, ignore, misjudge, slander or criticise someone else by our thoughts, words or actions, we commit a 'little murder' on that person. And if we keep that up, we are destroying that person though the process is slow.

God grieves when his children bicker, fight and destroy one another by thoughts, words, looks and gestures. Therefore let us love one another because love comes from God. One way to do this is by giving ourselves to fulfil the needs of others.

William Shakespeare in Sonnet 56 says, "Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds or..." True love endures in spite of difficulties. I like old fashioned weddings but I am more excited about old fashioned marriages - where love is permanent. True love never fails.

Humans are made to run on love and they do not function on anything else. Love thrives in the face of all hazards. So, take time to show love, especially to those who are near and precious to us. Love one another.

One of the main requisites of love is patience. Today people are so impatient. Each one wants his or her own way. In marriage, each one wants the other to agree on all counts. At home, at parties and even in public places one sees husbands and wives unable to control their annoyance with each other.

Love is patient and kind. It is happy with truth. Love never gives up and its hope and patience never fails. Love is tactful, polite and gracious. It rejoices with those who are happy and joyful.

Love is not jealous or conceited or proud. It is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable. It does not keep a record of wrong. It is not happy with evil. Love is never rude. It is never prone to anger or envy.

Love is eternal.
