Russian plane mishap: Flight and voice recorders sent abroad for analysis by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE The Flight Recorder (black box) and the Voice Recorder of the Russian made cargo plane which belly landed at the Bandaranaike International Airport on Wednesday are to be sent abroad for analysis to help determine the cause of the emergency landing. facilities for detailed analysis of such instruments are not available in Sri Lanka, sources said. However, Director General, Civil Aviation Authority H.M.C. Nimalasiri said that the 11-member team appointed to determine the cause of emergency landing of the cargo plane were studying all communication between the pilot and the traffic controllers. The commission is chaired by H. Subasinghe an Assistant Director of the Civil Aviation Authority. The other members of the commission are experts drawn from other fields like air worthiness and traffic control departments. The International Civil Aviation Organisation, a United Nations (UN) body has also been informed of the incident. The BIA was closed for more than 10 hours following the emergency landing of the plane and several international flights were diverted to neighbouring countries. The seven member crew escaped unhurt. But the No. 1 and No. 2 engines of the plane were damaged. The Russian manufactured plane IC 18 Delta 22005 bearing serial No. 188011105 was piloted by a Russian pilot. The plane, operated by Phoenix Aviation Company in the United Arab Emirates was brought to Sri Lanka to operate cargo flights, sources said. |
