Vandals set fire to Hunnasgiriya mountain

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy South Group Corr

Vandals set fire to the majestic Hunnasgiriya mountain in Wattegama on Friday destroying around 50 acres of grassland. The blaze was visible through the night and smoke was seen emanating from the burnt areas even on Saturday afternoon.

This fire was visible from Kandy, Katugastota and many other areas.

The present dry conditions experienced in the Wattegama area has dried up vegetation especially grass and weeds creating ideal conditions for the vandals to start the fire.

The burning terrain was such that it was difficult for firefighters to reach the site. Putting out the fire was also hampered by the lack of water as most sources of water had dried up.

Fire Brigade officials in Kandy appealed to the people not to start these bush fires as it could cause much damage to vegetation as they easily spread to other areas.
