Lankan radio station in Sweden celebrates fourth anniversary 'Sri Lanka Jayahanda', the first Lankan radio station and the only Sinhala radio service in Sweden, completes its fourth year this week. Sri Lanka Jayahanda was initiated by Mr. and Mrs. Jayaratne Wijekoon, presently domiciled in Stockholm, on February 8, 1999 to serve the Sri Lankan community in Sweden. According to a news release from Sri Lanka Jayahanda, the main objective of this radio broadcast is to give good publicity on Sri Lanka and to promote the country in Sweden. Sri Lankans can listen to their own music, news related to the island and other important matters concerning them. Children of the Sri Lankan community would specially be able to develop a habit of listening to this radio and thereby, improve the bond to Sri Lanka as well as the Sinhala language. Sri Lanka Jayahanda is meant to be a platform for Sri Lankans abroad, giving them an opportunity to retain their identity. Listeners can call in to request their favourite songs. They can send letters, short articles and recipes and also their views, suggestions and contributions for the continuation of the broadcast during the two-hour programme.Interviews with well-known Sri Lankans such as Most Ven. Udugama Dhammadassi Ratanapala Sri Buddharakkhitha Mahanayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Maha Viharaya Chapter, Most Ven. late Madihe Pannasiha Mahanayake Thera, Rev. Medagama Wajiragnana Mahanayake Thera of Great Britain, Minister G. L. Peiris, the late Minister C. V. Gunaratne, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse, Prof. V. K. Samaranayake of the Colombo University, Rohan Gunaratne, singers W. D. Amaradewa the late Gunadasa Kapuge, Latha Walpola, Victor Ratnayake, artist Jayasiri Semage and many others have been broadcast in Sri Lanka Jayahanda. The radio service can also be heard throughout the world on the internet, at any time of day. |
