Second crafts village to be opened: Opportunity to watch skilled craftsmen in action

The second in a chain of ten crafts villages, to be opened this year, will be inaugurated at the Folk Art Centre Complex, Battaramulla on February 20. The move is intended to afford buyers and others the opportunity observing handicrafts being turned out by skilled craftsmen and women, at it was done in ancient times in rural areas. The first crafts village is operating in Sigiriya.

The 20 stalls under construction in Battaramulla are aesthetically designed and built of mud and stones.

The Folk Art Centre is set amidst bamboo grooves and trees with the bird sanctuary and the Diyawanna waterway nearby and is expected to draw tourists.

The village will be opened to the public up to 8 p.m.

Four million rupees has been spent on the project to date, Chairman, National Crafts Council (NCC) Buddhika Keerthisena said.

The crafts villages are a project of the Ministry of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion and the Ministry of Rural Economy.

Visitors will get the opportunity of viewing the manufacture of woodwork, traditional handicrafts, batik, silver jewellery, rush and reed ware, lace and embroidery and gem cutting.

The Folk Art Centre will also have a sales centre with a wide range of local handicrafts. Other features include a museum displaying antiques and contemporary award-winning handicrafts, a library and an open air theatre, where performances of folk arts and dancing will take place every day, Adviser to the NCC, P. G. Ratnayake said.
