TNA plans expansion strategy The Tamil National Alliance is planning a new strategy to expand its coalition with the political parties in the South, sources said. TNA members met representatives of the Upcountry People's Front led by Minister P. Chandrasekaran and the Western Province People's Front led by Parliamentarian Mano Ganeshan at a special meeting held in Colombo on Wednesday. TNA representatives discussed in detail the coalition with UPF and WPPF and also exchanged views on annexing various other political parties from the North and the East and in the upcountry to the TNA alliance. Earlier leader of the Ceylon Workers' Congress Minister Arumugam Thondaman has expressed misgivings about an alliance with TNA as it was not possible for his party to subscribe to the politics of the North and the East. Meanwhile informed sources said that TNA would have further talks over the expansion of its alliance in order to contest elections. At present the TNA, which comprises Tamil United Liberation Front, Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (Suresh Wing), All Ceylon Tamil Congress, and Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation has fifteen seats in Parliament. With the intended coalition with Upcountry People's Front and the Western Province People's Front, it is expected to strengthen its power base. (A.P.) |
