SLMM chief tours N-E by Ananth Palakidnar The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Chief Major General Trond Furuhovde will make an extensive tour of the Eastern province this week to evaluate the ceasefire implementation and the functions of the SLMM. SLMM spokesperson Agnes Bragadottir told the Sunday Observer that Gen Furuhovde had met Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Army Commander Lt. General Lionel Balagalle and discussed the present state of the ceasefire agreement in detail. "Gen Furuhovde who took over for the second time as the Chief of the SLMM last week, is very keen on stabilising the ceasefire agreement further. Gen. Furuhovde will meet the representatives of the LTTE, armed forces and the officials of the SLMM," Bragadottir said. She also said that the SLMM which will be completing its second year as with the ceasefire agreement was effectively maintaining the ceasefire in the North and the East. No untoward incident has been reported for the past six months and we are happy with our functions," she said. The SLMM chief is scheduled to visit Trincomalee on Monday, Batticaloa on Tuesday and Ampara on Wednesday. He is also expected to meet the LTTE's political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan in Kilinochchi shortly after his return from abroad next week. |
