Tharindu Ariywansa's century helps St. Joseph's to Gilmour Jayasuriya Trophy St. Joseph's by virtue of their 52-run lead on the first innings over S. Thomas' won the Gilmour Jayasuriya Challenge Trophy in their centenary game of the schools cricket season at Mount Lavinia yesterday which ended in a draw. The Thomians made 172 in their first innings, while the Joes went on to make 224 for 8 declared. The Thomians fared much better in their second turn and were 221 for 7 when stumps were drawn. The Joes were 108 for 4 overnight and helped by an aggressive 112 runs off just 116 deliveries by Tharindu Ariyawansa with 18 hits to the ropes overtook the Thomian total quite comfortably. Thomian off-spinner Nigel Adams was the most successful bowler claiming 3 for 50, while Pramuditha Rodrigo and Sajith Kularatne chipped in with two wickets each. The Thomians in their second turn did quite well with Ravinath Panduwawala top scoring with 47, while four other batsmen made 20s. St. Joseph's last won in 1998 while S. Thomas' last won in 1995. S. Thomas' 172 (Sanjeev Mendis 36, Sajith Kularatne 20, Ravinath Panduwawala 18, Pramuditha Rodrigo 17, Shane Godwin not out 15, Nigel Adams 11, Christopher Fleming 3 for 37, Rajiv Vedachalan 3 for 40) and 221 for 7 at close (Isuru Warnakulasuriya 21, Pramuditha Rodrigo 27, Ravinath Panduwawala 47, Sanjeev Mendis 28, C. de Silva 26, R. Weerasinghe 2 for 41).
