84 players in action at 21st ITF Junior Tennis in Colombo by LAL GUNESEKERA Sixty eight players from overseas (39 boys and 29 girls) together with 16 Sri Lankans (10 boys and six girls) will vie for honours at the 21st International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior International Championship to be staged at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath from February 16 to 22. This is an under-18 tournament in singles and doubles which is an Group V event of the ITF. Among the 49 boys, India are sending the biggest contingent of 14, followed by Japan (9), Chinese Taipei (5) and South Korea (3), while there are one entry each from Thailand, England, Russia, Sorbia, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark and Malaysia. The highest ranked player among the boys is Sri Lanka's Nishendran Sivendran (258) while the other ranked Lankan players are - Amrith Rupasinghe (422), Chathuranga Vidanaratchi (667), Sasith Wickremasinghe (909), Dinusha Wijesuriya (1021), Rukmal Cooray (1104), Kishan Sudusinghe (1104), Udith Wickremasinghe (1104), Sasihivarnan Sabanathan (1314). The highest ranked player among the girls is India's Vandana Murali (196), while the four ranked players from Sri Lanka are - Amitha Arudpragasam (633), Mahosha Seneviratne (678), Thiyumi Abeysinghe (901) and Thavindra Ekanayake (1052), though Dinali de Silva and Jithmi Jayawickreme too is in the line-up of 35 entries. India are again sending the highest number of entries for the girls event - 16, followed by Japan (4), Maldive Islands (3) and Thailand (2), while there are one entry each from Australia, Slovakia, Chinese Taipei and South Korea. |
