Sahil Malhotra wins Senior and Junior Lectra monthly Golf Medals

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr.

Indian born Sahil Malhotra put up a sparkling display to win both the Junior and Senior monthly medals at the eighth round of the Lectra monthly golf championship organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and sponsored by the Lectra Apparel Technologies and played at the Victoria golf links at Rajawella.

Teenager Sahil Malhotra, a student from Colombo International School and son of the Assistant High Commissioner for India based in Kandy put up a fine performance and displayed in no uncertain terms that he could be a threat to men in the senior division when he netted the top score of 63 which enabled him to oust the experienced who made 64 nett to finish runner up. A keen tussle was witnessed and Sahil Malhotra playing to a handicap of 21 won in a canter with just a point separating them. Carl Kelaart and Majid Awn with scores of 66 nett each finished third. Here again a close fight was witnessed.

Having won the men's senior title, seventeen year-old Sahil Malhotra had no difficulty in wrapping up the boys junior title with a nett score of 63, thus completing a fine double. Sahil Malhothra who was lying eight with 316 points at the end of the December, 2003 championship in the same Division two championship should have no difficulty to be among the first four when the table of points is computed for the January 2004 contest.

Ingrid Baun who came all the way from Germany won the title for the ladies by securing 70 nett and this was a good score considering the fact that the course was a little difficult to play after the drought. Niloo Jayatillake who is lying third in the table of points finished a close second with 72 nett. But she was given a very close fight by her sister Roshini Sangani who too made 72 nett. But on a count back Niloo Jayatillake was declared winner.

The Nine-Hole competition for Mini Juniors was won by Shamara Wettimuni.
