OMVSC cricket sixes today

Old Moratu Vidyalians Sports Club (OMVSC) has organised a six-a-side cricket tournament on 8th February 2004 (today) at Moratu Vidyalaya grounds, Moratuwa to commemorate the seventieth (70) anniversary of their Alma-Mater Moratu Maha Vidyalaya.

Only a limited number of schools have been invited to participate and they are: Prince of Wales, Asoka Vidyalaya, Sri Sumangala, Ananda Sastralaya, Sri Piyaratne, Piliyandala Central, St. John's, Panadura and Moratu Vidyalaya.

The winners and runners-up will receive handsome cash prizes and there will be prizes for Best Batsman, Best Bowler, Best Fielder and Best All-rounder of the tournament.

Moors beat Chilaw Marians by 10 wkts

Two fine half centuries from S. Jayasundera (94) and C. Hathurusinghe (50) enabled Moors SC to beat Chilaw Marians by 10 wickets in the Premier Plate semi-final cricket match played at FTZ Katunayake yesterday.

Chilaw Marians 91 and 223 (A. Perera 67, I. Muthalip 70, T.Nirosh 25, S. Wijeratne 38, T. Abeyratne 3 for 60, S. Jayawardena 3 for 41).

Moors SC 289 for 9 overnight 303 all out (S. Jayasundera 94, M.Dunasinghe 25, C. Hathurusinghe 50, W. Fernando 25, T. Abeyaratne 32 n.o., D. Niroshan 3 for 26, D. Perera 3 for 42, C. Jayawardena 2 for 52) and 12 for no loss.

Wijayabahu Motocross Feb. 22 in Kurunegala

Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee has organised a Wijayabahu Motocross 2004 in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Association of Racig Drivers and Riders on February 22 at Wijayabahu Army Camp, Boyagane, Kurunegala. There are ten events included in the meet. There is an event for women and also for kids.

The organisers have called for entries and further details can be had from Organiser, Wijeyabahu Motocross 2004, Wijayabahu Army Camp, Boyagane, Kurunegala.

Old Uvites qualify to play in div. II

Old Uvites Sports Club qualified to play in the Division II cricket tournament organised by Sri Lanka Cricket, when they won all their division III Badulla District cricket encounters.

Old Uvites SC playing in their last encounter, beat the more fancied Badulla Maroons SC by 4 wickets in the game played at the Badulla cricket grounds. They have so far beaten Uva Paranagama, Citiyas SC and Albian SC.

Badulla Maroons SC batting first were all out for 116 runs in 35.2 overs. Yohan Irriyawela (25) was the only batsman excel for Maroons. In reply, Old Uvites SC scored the required runs losing 6 wickets in 27.5 overs. Mohamed Ashard top scored with 27 runs.

St. John's - 1st innings win

Krishan de Silva, 15-year-old left-hander from Sri Rahula Vidyalaya, Kandy scored twin fifties against St. John's Panadura. His two valuable knocks did not prevent St. John's in registering a first innings win. Tharanga Ravin took 6 for 36 for St. John's.

St. John's 166 (Tharaka Chandima 44, C. Lakmal 22 not out, B. Udesha 22, Vindika Prasanna 4 for 12, Dhanushka Bandara 3 for 35) and 189 (B. Udesha 21, T. Chandima 21, M. Niroshan 40, C. Lakmal 45, Dhanushka Bandara 4 for 58, A. Gunaratne 2 for 31, S. Fernando 2 for 36, M. Bothotage 2 for 30).

Sri Rahula 137 (Krishan Silva 51, Asela Gunaratne 31, Samitha Fernando 21, Tharanga Ravin 6 for 36, T. Chandima 4 for 57) and 89 for 2 wickets (Krishan Silva 66 not out, A. Panditharatne 14 not out).

Prabath Indrajith of NSB wins singles title for 4th time

Prabath Indrajith of Nationals Savings Bank won the Nationalised Services men's singles table tennis title for the fourth consecutive year when he beat Sarath Wijesooriya also of National Savings Bank in the final.

In the women's tournament, M. I. Tharangani of BCC beat Ira Ruwanpathirana of People's Bank in the final.

Open men's singles: Winner - Prabath Indrajith (NSB), runner-up - Sarath Wijesooriya (NSB).

Open women's singles: Winner - M. I. Tharangani (BCC), runner-up - Ira Ruwanpathirana (People's Bank).

Novices men's singles: Winner - S. D. Gunawardana (Government Press), runner-up - Waruna Gunawardana (NSB).

Novices women's singles: Winner - Daya Peiris (SLRC), runner-up - P. Colombathanthri (BCC). Men's doubles: Winner - Prabath Indrajith/Sarath Wijesooriya (NSB), runner-up - Anura Shantha/H.K. Thilakananda (Insurance).

Women's doubles: Winner - Ama Suraweera/Daya Peiris (SLRC), runners-up - A. K. Nilanthi/Vajira Surangani (Insurance).

Mixed doubles: Winner - H. Silva/Daya Peiris (SLRC), runners-up - Aruna Shantha/A. K. Nilanthi (Insurance).

Veteran men's singles: Winner - P. S. de Silva (Government Press), runner-up - Sarath Wijesooriya (NSB).

Veteran women's singles: Winner - Ama Suraweera (SLRC), runner-up - Ira Ruwanpathirana (People's Bank).
