ISO 9001:2000 certification for CEAT

CEAT, the leading pneumatic tyre giant, has received the prestigious ISO 9001:2000 international quality management systems certification for its operations in Sri Lanka.

The certification covers all functions at CEAT such as the manufacturing operations at the plants of CEAT at Kelaniya and Kalutara, technical services, engineering services, quality assurance, purchasing, sales, marketing, human resources and training. "The ISO certification is a recognition of the allround efforts put in by the entire CEAT team, and a further assurance to our customers both local and international, about the Quality Focus of our organisation", said Managing Director and CEO, Oscar Braganza.

The accreditation by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) was awarded to the management of CEAT by Bureau Veritas Quality International (BVQI), in Colombo last week. "This certification reinforces the intensive Process Orientation adopted by the company, at all stages of the manufacturing process at our two plants," Braganza said.

The ISO 9001:2000 certification for CEAT's Kelaniya plant is particularly significant because it is the first major quality certification received by the plant, which was set up in 1962. The Kalutara plant received ISO 9002:1994 certification in 1997 and the new certification represents an upgrade to ISO 9001:2000, reflecting quality improvements made to the production process, Braganza explained.

CEAT manufactures and markets an extensive range of tyres including radials for leading Japanese and European cars and tyres for commercial and industrial vehicles such as trucks, buses, light trucks, forklifts and heavy vehicles such as payloaders, graders and backhoe loaders. The company accounts for a market share of over 60 per cent in the truck and light truck tyres segments of the local market.
