"My Wedding" - an exhibition with a difference One of the most important milestones in any young girl's life is her wedding day. Every bride wants to make sure that the special event will take place without a single hitch and the wedding ceremony will be one that she will treasure for the rest of her life.
Still, however meticulous she maybe, not every bride is able to realise that wish if only because she had no time or help to attend to those numerous wedding related chores to her satisfaction. Like choosing her bridal trousseau for instance, matching each outfit with the identical coloured underslip and blouse, and finding the right shoes and jewellery to complete her ensemble. Or again finding a suitable hair dresser and the right beautician to make-up her face on her Big Day. Since it is the bride who gives the reception, it is the bride's family who must choose a hotel for the reception, print the wedding cards and choose the flowers she wants for her bouquet. The bridegroom on the other hand has to see to the bridal car, the wedding cake and wine and the flowers for the bridesmaids and flower girls. This being their wedding day it is natural for the bride and the bridegroom to also be involved in these activities. A formal wedding thus needs a lot of planning ahead with every single detail being looked into with meticulous attention so that there wouldn't be last minute hiccups. Apart from the bride and the bride groom and their immediate families, the organising of a formal wedding involves a host of other people along the way; from the seamstress who is responsible for stitching the bridal outfits, as well as the outfits worn by the bridesmaids and flowergirls, to the person in charge of making the cake structure and the wedding cake, from the florists to the banquet manager of the hotel where the reception is to be held, each of them has an important role to play in ensuring that the wedding ceremony is a complete success. All these services can now be seen in action under the same roof when a unique exhibition, the first of its kind incidentally gets off the ground on February 19 at the BMICH. Aptly titled "My Wedding 2004" and expected to end on February 22, this three day exhibition will give would be brides a hands on experience of those services she needs most; namely, bridal dressers, salons, beauty therapists, designers, cake decorators, caterers, beauty products, cosmetics and bridal jewellery. In addition brides- to- be can take their pick from a long line of talented photographers for their wedding photos, and even make their bookings for their honeymoon hotel from a list of exotic luxurious hotels personally delivered to them by on the spot hotel personnel. For the lucky ones who can afford a honeymoon abroad, there will be several travel agents who will set up booths on these days, to advise them as to where they could spend a truly memorable honeymoon. What is more, the organisers of this exhibition have gone a step further by providing stalls for banks, insurers as well as family planning and family counselling to ensure that the couple stay happily married. The exhibition is being organised by Ceylinico Exhibition and Conventions, a division of the International College of Business and Technology (ICBT). Its main objective is to give brides everything they need under one roof. "We are however shifting our focus from the bride to everything that is connected to her wedding, which is a new concept in this country", says Mr. Jagath Alwis, Deputy chairman, Ceylinico Consolidated.He said that a special attraction at the forthcoming exhibition will be the daily fashion shows handled by leading choreographer Brian Kerkoven with the best of Lanka's male and female models bringing to the catwalk the best of creations by Colombo's leading fashion designers. - C.
