Displeasure over A/L postponement by NEOMI KODIKARA Much to the dismay of parents, the GCE Advanced Level 2004 examination has been postponed till May 6 due to the General Election and the Wayamba Provincial Council Election, which are scheduled to be held on April 2 and 22 respectively. The Department of Examinations, under the instructions of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs, has arranged to hold the exams from May 6 to 31, at a stretch. "If the exams start in April, they will be interrupted by the elections and the festive season," a senior official of the Department told the Sunday Observer. The postponement is expected to save six million rupees, which would have been incurred if the examinations had been held in April in two sessions, as it was earlier proposed. "If that was the case, we would have had to carry out seven dispatches, but now we will be able to do with three," he explained. Between Rs 65,000 and Rs 70,000 is spent on one dispatch. The Department spends around eight million rupees per day to conduct the GCE A/L exams. However, some parents the Sunday Observer spoke to expressed their displeasure over the postponement. "It will affect students entering the universities as the date of intake will be unnecessarily delayed until next year," they said. In a bid to grant the opportunity for eligible students to enter the universities in October of the same year they sit for the exam, the Ministry decided two years ago to hold the A/L exams in April instead of in August. However, the students becoming eligible in 2004 will only be able to enter the universities next year. |
