DR's birthday on Feb. 23

Lake House will commemorate the 118th birthday of late D. R. Wijewardene, founder of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd., on February 23.

There will be an All Night Pirith on February 21 followed by an alms-giving to the Maha Sanga.

The ceremony is organised by the staff members and the employees of the Lake House.

President to set up 'Think Tank'

The President will be setting up a 'National Think Tank' to recommend urgent national policies and action plans that should be taken in the areas of economy, education, health, law and order and crime prevention, peace and other major social issues.

She will, in the coming days, invite leading professionals, academics, the business community both from large, medium and small enterprises to participate in this 'Think Tank'.

UNP special session

The United National Party will hold a special session today, Feb. 22 at 9.00 am at the New Town Hall Colombo to educate the membership on how the party plans to face the general election. UNP Spokesman former Galle district MP Gayantha Karunatileke said that the party hopes to hold the first public meeting in Kandy after they hand over nominations papers.

The special session will be attended by ex MPs, members of the Provincial Councils, Pradeshiya Sabhas and the local government along with the officials of the UNP branches.

Rs. 10m heroin bust

Customs Narcotic Control Unit at the BIA nabbed an Englishman with four kilos of heroin valued at Rs. ten million, concealed in the false bottom and lid of his suitcase. The Englishman was travelling from Bombay with his elderly mother at the time of detection, yesterday.

Investigations directed by Baggage and Narcotic Director Customs S. Ramachandran revealed that this was the second visit of the Englishman to Sri Lanka from Bombay within two weeks.

Vijaya's death anniversary tomorrow

A floral tribute to mark the 16th death anniversary of the late Vijaya Kumaratunga, film star, politician and husband of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will be held at the premises near his statue at Seeduwa, tomorrow.

The State Film Corporation under the instructions of its chairman, Jayantha Dharmadasa has organised a series of films to be screened free of charge at the Elphinstone theatre, Maradana, starting from 10 a.m. A commemmorative speech on Vijaya by veteran actor, Ravindra Randeniya will be delivered at the same venue around 6 p.m.

Observer Staffer's mother dies

Mrs. D.L. Melpitiya (Retired Teacher), mother of Ananda Melpitiya (Observer Staff), passed away on Friday morning after a brief illness.

She is the Mother-in-law of Rohana Hettiarachchi, (Chief Administrative Officer of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited). Funeral takes place at Mahaiyawa Cemetery today, February 15th at 3 pm.

Cortege leaves residence at 2 pm 23, Nawayalatenne, Katugastota.

Appointed Chief Administrative Officer

Rohana Hettiarachchi, Attorney-at-Law assumed duties as the Chief Administrative Officer of Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. last week.

He is a Bachelor of Commerce (Special) of the Kelaniya University.

Prior to assuming his new duties, he was a legal officer attached to ANCL for six years. He is presently following a Master's degree in Business Administration at the University of Peradeniya.

Financial assistance for heart surgery

M.B. Ruparathne (56 years) of No. 325, Piyasewana, Habarakada, Homagama has ischaemic heart disease and needs a coronary artery bypass (CABG) operation.

His consultant surgeon Dr. Rajeeva R. Peiris has recommended surgery at Durdans Hospital, approximately costing Rs. 325,000 which the patient cannot afford. Contributions towards his treatment can be remitted to his account No. 207-35484-6 at People's Bank, Kaduwela.

Help Anuque

Anuque Perera (six years), a student in grade 2 at St. Peter's College, Colombo, has been diagnosed with metastatic small round cell tumour (cancerous cells in the body). Doctor Jayantha Balawardana, Consultant Oncologist, has strongly recommended immediate medical treatment at 'Princess Margaret Hospital' Perth, Australia, for investigation and treatment.

It has been estimated by the Princess Margaret Hospital that the total cost would be around US$ 47,000 (SL Rs. 4,500,000) excluding travel and accommodation. This estimate includes the possibility of Bone Marrow Transplant.

Anuque's parents urgently and ardently appeal to the kind generosity of philanthropists and others of the general public to help save little Anuque's life by sending whatever financial assistance possible.

For this purpose, a special account has been opened at Sampath Bank Head office, under the title S.H.G. Perera - Account No. 1029-5006 2670.
