President's pictures first to spring up in Jaffna

The election campaign in the Jaffna peninsula kicked off with posters in support of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's Alliance which were plastered on the walls in the Jaffna town, sources said. Posters bearing pictures of the President were the first to appear in Jaffna and came up in the vicinity of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party office on Vembadi Road, sources said.

Meanwhile, several political parties getting ready for polls will be holding meetings in jaffna this week. Parties in the Tamil National Alliance, Eelam People's Democratic Party and Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (Perumal Wing) will work out their election agenda this week, sources said.

United National Party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and Sihala Urumaya are also planning to field their candidates in the North.

Security in the peninsula has been strengthened due to the presence of Tamil political party leaders.
