12-member team will row for Sri Lanka at SAF Games

by LESLIE FERNANDO

For the first time, Rowing has been included as one of the disciplines at the SAF Games to be held in Islamabad, Pakistan from March 29 to April 7 and 12 oarsmen will row for Sri Lanka in two categories - open category above 72.5 kgs and Light Weight below 72.5 kgs.

The 12-member rowing team has been chosen after a series of trials and assessments carried out since mid December 2003 by the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL).

The team is currently hard at training under the watchful eyes of Lakmal Wickremage who is the national rowing coach.

According to ARASL official, the rule permits teams to provide for 50% of the crew as reserves and as a result does not permit to have reserves for the single scull event while two reserves are permitted for the coxless Fours while one reserve each for the coxless pair and double scull event.
