Royal - Thomian twenty fifth match (1903)

Match drawn - crowd invades field!

The Royal-Thomian match of 1903 saw an interesting draw but it came with the invasion of the field by the spectators.

Royal, needing 152 runs to win, were 125 for 9 wickets when the spectators rushed on to the field and the match was stopped. The official result was a draw.

The fourth draw in the Royal-Thomian series was witnessed in 1903 encounter that was played on the CCC grounds, Maitland Crescent.

It was the 25th match in the series and it turned out to be an exciting draw with the Royalists last-wicket pair of R. S. Wijesinghe and 'baby' of the team E. Dornherst holding out.

The Royalists needed 152 runs for victory and this year also saw the first recorded crowd invasion, which resulted in the game being draw.

Royal who had to make 152 to win, were 125 for 9 wickets when the invasion of the field took place.

Though the umpires did their best to ask the spectators to leave the field, it was in vain and the match had to be called off shortly before 6 p.m. that day. Royal was captained by Frank Ondatjie and S. Thomas' by A. F. Molamure.

S. Thomas' batted first and made 188 towards which P. Daniels made 36, while A. M. Walloopillai and E. F. Arndt made 34 runs a piece. Arndt somewhat set a record when in one over from R. S. Wijesinghe hit 24 runs - six fours. To get a four in every ball of the over is a rare achievement. The top-scorer, however, was A. S. Eliyathamby with 39.

Royalist E. Joseph had the best figures in the first innings with 6 for 78.

Royal in their turn were out for 153, with R. S. Wijesinghe top-scoring with 32.

P. Daniels had the best figures of 5 for 7 runs off just four overs that he bowled at the Royalists in the first innings.

The Thomians made 116 in their second innings and this was due to a fine knock of 40 runs by P. Daniels, which followed his 36 in the first innings. In the first innings, Daniels was also associated in a fine fourth wicket partnership with A. S. Eliyathamby (39)

For the Royalists, skipper Frank Ondatjie took 4 for 23, while Joseph and Fonseka took three wickets each.

When the Royalists went in for their second innings, R. S. Wijesinghe top-scored with 41 not out and it eventually was left to him and 'baby' E. Dornherst to save the match for the Royalists.
