SLPA profits up by 34 percent The net profit of Sri lanka Ports authority (SLPA) has increased by 34 percent in 2003 to Rs 3.7 billion. SLPA has recorded a profit of Rs 3.7 billion in 2003 before and exceptional cost of Rs 3.1 billion on its successful voluntary retirement scheme.(VRS) SLPA has also recorded a revenue of Rs 16.4 billion in 2003 as against Rs 15.7 billion in 2002. All ports, Colombo, Galle, Trincomalee, Kankasanturai and Point Pedro, coming under the preview of the SLPA have contributed to the improved performance. The surge in volumes achieved by the SLPA is attributed to the aggressive marketing approach and higher performance levels maintained during the past two years adopted by Dr.Parakrama Dissanayake SLPA chairman on the instructions of minister Rauff Hakeem. With Jaya Container Terminal (JCT), increasing the welfare facilities, the VRS which involved 4000 port employees, deepening the access channel to the Colombo port and JCT water area and opening the North and South access channels during the year 2003 contributed to the progress achieved by the SLPA. Port of Colombo recorded its highest ever container throughput in 2003, 1.95 million TEUS as against the containers handled in 2002, 1.76 million TEUS. 3830 ships called at Sri lankan ports in 2003. In 2002 it was 3787. |
