The Sri Lanka Trade Centre in Chennai will be ceremonially opened on February 26 by Minister of Education, Government of Tamil-Nadu, S. Semmalai.

The new trade centre is situated at the Spencer Plaza, Chennai, one of India's biggest shopping malls and the best in Tamil-Nadu. Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial policy and Investment Promotion, Prof. G.L. Peiris is expected to grace the occasion.

The Sri Lanka Export Development Board has obtained the services of Indian Market Research Bureau to conduct a market survey and decide on the location and products to be displayed at the trade centre.

Clothing, footwear, processed food, tea, toys, jewellery, artificial flowers, herbal products, confectionaries, porcelainware and some of the products that will be on display at the new SLTC. It is estimated that around 15,000 people visit Spencer Plaza everyday which is located in the middle of Chennai, and 50,000 during weekends.

The EDB has leased 20,000 sq. ft. of space in the 2nd floor of the Spencer Plaza to set up the SLTC at a cost of Indian Rs. 120 per sq. ft. inclusive of basic services. Rs. 20m. in Sri Lankan money has been spent on stall construction and interior layout of the centre. Responding to an advertisement placed by the EDB in the local newspapers, leading Sri Lankan companies have taken all 16 trade stalls set up by the EDB.

The EDB will run its own office at the SLTC to co-ordinate services and to identify new products for promotion in the market. The trade stalls would be managed by the respective companies. Depending on the success of the SLTC Chennai project, the EDB would be looking at expanding into Mumbai and Hyderabad, said Mr. Sivaratnam.
