Hunas Falls : paradise plus

by Beverley Jansz

Hunas Falls is a Jetwing "paradise-plus" hotel in close proximity to Kandy. Built against the backdrop of a lush green forest and the icy Hunas Falls, the hotel stands at a location considered to be one of the most scenic spots in Sri Lanka. The comfort and charm of Hunas Falls Hotel fittingly compliments the natural beauty and magic of the surroundings.

Side view of Hunas Falls

Driving through winding roads wending through the lush Hunasgiriya tea estate of shady groves and the heady fragrance of fresh flowers, amidst serene surroundings, I reached Hunas Falls Hotel to be greeted with an 'Ayubowan' and a winning smile by a sparkling Hyacinth Gunawardena, probably the first female General Manager of a star-class hotel. Hyacinth's brilliant smile blended beautifully with the romantic atmosphere of the Hotel itself and its surroundings. I thought for a moment "Did Jetwing appointed her to add more charm to the beautiful Hunas Falls?"

We were treated to classic seasonal cuisine blended with flavours of spicy Asian tastes prepared by a versatile Executive Chef Janaka Walakuluarachchi and his team, served in casual but elegant surroundings at the hotel's restaurant located adjacent to a beautiful lake.

The comfortable and spacious bedrooms of Hunas Falls are equipped with a range of facilities, in-house movies, telephone facilities and a very well-stocked mini-bar - with the added luxury of an attentive valet to wait on guests.

Hunas Falls comprises 31 air-conditioned rooms inclusive of the 'Katsura' a Japanese-style suite with a traditional sitting room which opens into a private garden furnished with a low-slung, 'Emperor's style bed, a 'Royal Suite' and two luxury suites. Every guest room has a private balcony providing a magnificent view of the falls cascading down the rocks.

Hunas Falls which opened in 1971, has expanded rapidly and now stands as a 4-star plus hotel with all modern facilities offered to the discerning traveller. Facilities include a modern pool ringed by misty mountains, tennis, golf, billiards, croquet, jogging tracks, mountain trekking, cycling, fishing, boating, bird-watching, pony rides, badminton and lots else. The hotel also has a Kiddies Corner, Youth Room with games, Library, Business Centre, Banquet and conference facilities with all modern facilities to accommodate 150-200 guests.

Director, Marketing, Jetwing Hotels, Lalin de Mel said that Hunas Falls with be closed from May to July this year for massive refurbishment. All rooms will be fully refurnished with new carpets, curtains and bedrooms will be re-tiled and bathrooms further modernised. Cable TV will also be introduced and the channels will include HBO, Star Movies, Star Sports, Channel V and National Geographic Channel.

De Mel disclosed that there would be an extension of 20 standard rooms. Many would be converted to mini-suites to provide maximum comfort. Rooms would all include sitting rooms as well as a spacious balcony to enhance the splendid view of the mountains, tea country and the hotel's gorgeous garden, from guest rooms.

On completion of the refurbishment, Hunas Falls will be repositioned and will join the elite 'Small Luxury Hotels' Chain, de Mel said.

Fiesta Mexicana at Taj Samudra

Chilli is synonymous with Mexican food, but it is only chillies and Taccs. It is an immense variety of great dishes and a unique method of cooking. Spaniards invaded and colonized Mexico from 1521 to 1810. They brought ingredients from China, India and Europe, creating cuisine with strong character - flavourful like the Latin temperaments, colourful as the tropical landscape, fragrant as the primal jungle, exotic as the native orchids and always a tasteful feast.

Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo is presenting a Fiesta Mexicana which began on February 17. It will go on until Saturday February 28.

Two renowned Mexican Master Chefs, Roberto Traves and Sergio Snyder who are also entertainers have been specially flown in by Taj Samudra to prepare delicious and authentic Mexican cuisine.

Some of the popular dishes which make up the Fiesta Mexicana are Shrimps soup Alvarado, Corn and Pimento soup, Chicken in Mole Poblano, Crazy Chicken, Fish Veracruzana, Prawns Maya, Aztec Tortilla (Veg), Mushrooms Lochitz (Veg) Carrots Xala (Veg) and many more. (BJ)
