Familians in Harmony

Valentine's Day will go down in the history of Holy Family Convent, Colombo as a musical milestone because for the first time in the school's history the choir which will participate at an international musical competition to be held in Wales, UK in July this year; launched their debut CD "Familians in Harmony" on that day, a week ago.

The making of the CD is a laudable effort and all credit must go to the choir director pianist Soundarie David whose remarkable commitment and expertise made a near impossible task a reality.

The CD contains seventeen tracks and includes a selection of light classical songs of praise and workship like Ave Verum, The Lord's Prayer by Malotte, Panis Angelicus by Cesar Franke, and the hymn Make Me a Channel of Your Peace. The popular songs chosen by Soundarie David are ones that you will always enjoy listening to. The choir sings the Platters favourite 'Only You', Love Will Find a Way, To Sir with Love, When You Believe and Yesterday Once More to name a few. The harmony arrangements are unusual and good and the recording engineered by Neranjan de Silva.

Music lovers will surely be happy to note that the Familian Choir comprises 37 girls, their ages ranging from fifteen to nineteen years, and has earned the distinction of being the first choir from Sri Lanka to perform at the prestigious 58th Llangolen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales in July this year.

"The recording of the seventeen tracks took two days, and we prepared for it from October. We recorded the tracks at Bishop's College, Auditorium very early in the day from 6.30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the students co-operated fully.

I am happy with the finished product - the school children although very young, sound very professional singing all the songs. For our entry to the competition I selected the Ave Verum, The Lord's Prayer, Only You, Power of Your Love and When You Believe. One of the conditions laid out in the Choir Competition is that we sing a song by a Sri Lankan living composer or by a demised one and so we have chosen Mangala Mohotha by Mignonne who very graciously gave us the manuscript of her song.

The Familians from Sri Lanka are the only South Asian choir taking part and in the rhythm section are Neranjan de Silva - keyboards and Christopher Prins - drums," says a happy Soundarie David, a past student of Holy Family who has brought honour not only to her school but also to Sri Lanka.

The reason for the release of the debut CD "Familians in Harmony" is to raise funds towards the travel cost of the choir of 37 schoolchildren and we are confident that music lovers will support this laudable cause.
