Kadirgamar dismisses allegations of State media bias by Don Asoka Wijewardena Media Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar yesterday dismissed allegations made by UNP General Secretary, Senerath Kapukotuwa, that the State Media is acting in a biased manner, and said that he would respond to the UNP General Secretary after consulting various professional bodies. Kapukotuwa, in a letter to Minister Kadirgamar on Thursday, alleged that the State Media continued to act as the propaganda tool of one political party in the critical context of an election campaign during which the State Media is under a special duty to act in a fair and just manner. The letter also stated that the degree of bias on the part of the State media today was unprecedented. Minister Kadirgamar dismissing the allegations said that he would not agree with the letter and added that he would be sending a comprehensive response by Monday after obtaining the advice of several professional bodies. "It would not be advisable to prepare a response with ad hoc decisions at this juncture. It is extremely important to carefully go through the said allegations against the President on the use of State Media," he said pointing out that the contents of the letter were being considered with consultation of a number of professional associations to prepare a factual and impartial letter which would be sent to the UNP General Secretary. |
